questions about ram & screen
To anyone who's used the device - How much RAM is available to applications? How is the visibility of the screen in direct sunlight (someone has reported that theirs is almost unreadable)? Thanks! |
Hi shortshrift
With my device ther is 39.28mb available in storage with 19.39 free, and 112.51 in program with 73.66 free when nothing is running. I have installed a few programs, some into device memory and some onto the storage card, the main one to ram was spb Pocket Plus. There is also something called TF111 installed on device, which i know nothing about, and UK Network Settings that is just the tmobile setup cab, and I think therefore tiny.
The screen is great, though on full brightness the battery life may be too short, mid range is as good, if not more readable, than my previous MDA Vario, though we don't have bright sunlight up here in durham right now, will try it when we do.

Stephen, Thanks for answering so quickly. I had seen conflicting posts elsewhere about the amount of free RAM, but your answer clears this up. As regards the screen, there was a user review posted on Expansys which implied that it was a different type from other PDA screens and not good in direct sunlight. I'm used to using my PDA for maps when hiking, and this would be a problem if true. Any news on battery life, by the way? |
Hi The ram was worrying me a little when reading about it, and its confusing, im trying to compare it to a normal pc to give some perspective and coinsider the Program Memory is the same as Ram, and the storage is more like hard drive storage, as is any card in a memory slot. Theoretically there is also rom where the operating system is stored, though whether this will be accessible in any way is unknown, on my old Vario there were loads of alternative rom images available with extra utils in but info on the G900 is scarce and unreliable at the moment. The battery .... hmmmmm - its been fully charged for 4 hours or so, and used for maybe 60 minutes browsing web, playing with email, installing a few programs etc and im estimating 75% - i say estimating because the power bar isn't calibrated with % on any more... Also of note, the manual states the battery wont give its best untill its been through a few cycles..... I tend to leave it on the bedside table on charge each night so will need to give it a few days before im sure about this... I also obsess with maps, having google maps, windows live (with maps) smart2go on already, and will probably put tomtom on at some point, and possibly a couple of others i have to show os maps, and connect to my bluetooth gps module. I have a garmin for the car but like to know where i am ;-) The think i noticed about all the map software i have put on so far is that it doesnt adjust for the high resolution, so you get masses of detail and tiny writing, readable but tiny, hopefully later versions may let you adjust to taste... The screen seems great, i have it set to a low brightness (about a third of its capacity) to maximise battery life at the moment, and it was fine in bright light, though it wasnt sunny bright if you know what i mean, more north east bright grey.... The screens high resolution makes detail finer which makes it look a little less contrasty but its hard to tell, if important to you I would find one to see, if its sunny tomorrow I will see what mine is like though. Hi I have mine now and as other's have mentioned it is not a transreflective screen and so outside you will not be able to see the screen easily if at all, I'd say little use for maps outside and even in a car it's probably not going to be easy to see.
The screen is great, but indoor or shaded use only in my opinion.

Hi Had some sun this morning (finally!) and the screen was readable, just, but I wouldnt say its a good solution for bright sunlight - just passable. Not sure why this happens now, it started last night, its as if there is a keylock engaging, i've done a wipe to remove any programs and that seems to have helped so it might just be a piece of incompatible software and will try ringing the phone next time (hopefully wont be one!) it locks up to see what happens... Anyone else had the locking up problem ? Stephen |
Thought it was just me ... have spent a lot of time trying to work out these lockups. It can go for 24 hours no problem then all of a sudden it can happen 6 times in a row within an hour. When it's locked a phone call rings to it, but the device doesn't let you know it's ringing, no sound and no way of switching it on. Weridly I had alot of lock ups on day one but it appears to be settling ... possibly. myg900.com |
